Two young cancer survivors want everyone to have the joy of Hope the bear this Christmas

Young cancer survivors, Sumayyah, 3, and Olivia, 8, star in the launch of this year’s national fundraising campaign from H. Samuel and Ernest Jones, to help raise money for CLIC Sargent, the UK’s leading charity for children and young people with cancer.

The moment Sumayyah first met Hope the bear!

Hope the cuddly CLIC Sargent bear

CLIC Sargent’s adorable Christmas bear, named Hope, has already captured the heart of Sumayyah, who spent the majority of lockdown in hospital this year. The toddler received Hope in the post as a Christmas surprise, and the heartwarming moment she first met the cuddly bear has been captured as part of a video to launch the fundraising campaign.

Sumayyah, aged three, was first diagnosed with leukaemia in August 2018 after her Mum, Amira, had taken her back and forth to the doctors for months. After six months of treatment, Sumayyah went home in January 2019. However, the cancer returned in June that year and she had to have a stem cell transplant from her Mum in September 2019.

The toddler was once again put into remission at the end of last year but continued to suffer from various side effects after her transplant. In March this year, as the country went into lockdown, Sumayyah suffered with seizures at home and the toddler and her Mum spent three months isolated in hospital without any visitors.

Amira, Sumayyah’s mum, said: “Several months later, Sumayyah is now doing well. We’ve had hiccups with some ups and downs along the journey, especially during the time of the coronavirus and the lockdown. We didn’t know what was going to happen during isolation, but CLIC Sargent did all they could to help during such a difficult time. We are really grateful for everything they have done for us. Sumayyah is home now and she is happy. I wouldn’t have been able to do this on my own.”

Sumayyah was delighted to receive Hope the CLIC Sargent bear, and the toddler, who started nursery this year, now takes her Hope the bear everywhere she goes, even asking to take him to nursery with her. He never leaves her side.

CLIC Sargent’s Faith, Hope, Charity necklace

A special silverfaith, hope and charity’ pendant which is available on H. Samuel’s online store is also helping to support young cancer patients this Christmas.

Olivia, 8, who stars in this year’s fundraising campaign, gave her Mum, Sian, the CLIC Sargent necklace to say thank you for being by her side throughout this past year. Olivia was diagnosed with Burkitt’s non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma in February this year after doctors found a mass the size of a watermelon attached to her ovary, uterus, bowel and stomach.

Olivia started chemotherapy treatment at Addenbrooke’s Hospital in Cambridge but as lockdown struck, only one parent was able to be with her at any one time.

The precious moment when Olivia gave her mum the necklace was captured by her Dad, Chris.

Chris, said: “Jess, our CLIC Sargent Social Worker, has been absolutely magnificent. She said I’ll see what I can do for you, straight away. I’m self-employed and I didn’t know how I could cope with my finances for that long and she said she would see what she could do with grants and help and she did the best she could, which was really helpful.”

Elizabeth Lowrey, Lead Account Manager at CLIC Sargent, said: “We absolutely love this year’s CLIC Sargent Christmas bear Hope and the ‘faith, hope and charity’ necklace, and want to thank Ernest Jones and H. Samuel for helping to support young people with cancer by selling them this Christmas.

“This past year has been hard for everyone but especially the young people with cancer and their families that CLIC Sargent supports. The money raised by H. Samuel and Ernest Jones will help us continue to be there to offer practical, emotional and financial support when families need it most. We hope you love this year’s Hope the bear and necklace!”
