Tom and his Two Wheels make it to Tokyo!
15 months and 9,000 miles later, superstar supporter Tom Howard has cycled from London to Tokyo to raise awareness and funds in support of the charity who supported his brother.
Departing on 11 August 2017, 26-year-old Tom from Maidstone, Kent, set off on an epic challenge that would see him travel through 10 countries in a bid to raise awareness and vital funds for CLIC Sargent.
Despite Tom anticipating the journey would take him six months to complete, four months and 3,800 miles in, Tom decided to take his time on the rest of his journey so he could really enjoy this once in a lifetime experience and absorb the scenery and other delights on offer. It also meant he would encounter lots more friendly locals on his way and tell them all about CLIC Sargent and how they helped his brother Harry.
Choosing CLIC Sargent as a charity to fundraise for was a no-brainer for me because of the outstanding support they provided to my brother Harry after he was diagnosed with a brain tumour in November 2011.”
Throughout this journey, Tom was overwhelmed by the kindness and generosity of strangers, many of whom offered him hot drinks, food and shelter as he amazed them with the stories of his travels and the sights he had seen.
It hasn’t all been plain sailing though, as Tom encountered his fair share of injuries (which he expected with a 9,000 cycle ride ahead of him), some food poising and even an encounter with a wild bear, which he has described as “the most terrifying experience of his life”.
He is now safe and sound in Tokyo, fundraising in local offices to try and hit his £5k target by retelling some of his wonderful adventures.
CLIC Sargent Fundraising Engagement Manager Alex Dury said: “It has been amazing to track Tom’s progress over the last 15 months and hear all about the wonderful sights he has seen and people he has met. We are so appreciative of all the support he has given to CLIC Sargent and that he chose to fundraise for the charity during this amazing cycle ride!”
Tom kept a blog through his journey, documenting many of the wonderful experiences he had and sharing selfies with the many kind strangers he met along the way. Be sure to check Tom’s blog: https://twowheelstotokyo.com/
