The energy company formed a partnership with the leading cancer support charity in February, aiming to offer tailored support to customers struggling with the costs of cancer.
£600 a month
CLIC Sargent research revealed that families can face additional expenditure of £600 a month during a child’s treatment – energy bills being a significant factor alongside transport and food costs.
More than 10 families have already benefited from the partnership, which sees CLIC Sargent social workers identify British Gas customers who might benefit from discussions with the specialist team.
A recent example saw a family struggling to top up their pre-payment meter due to tight finances, as their son was going through cancer treatment and awaiting an operation. Their CLIC Sargent social worker referred them to the team, and British Gas immediately exchanged their pre-payment meter before making alterations to the family’s account to help with energy costs in the future.
Support packages offered by the specialist team include a warm home discount, altered payment plans and account health checks.
