The current fundraising total for the campaign currently stands at £109,000 – eclipsing an initial target of £100,000 and with more money still to be received.
Every pound raised will help CLIC Sargent offer vital emotional, practical and financial support to young cancer patients and their families.
As part of the campaign, a host of Britain’s best known and most well-loved celebrities donned outrageous wigs along with thousands of people in schools and workplaces across the UK on Wednesday 22 May.
Each celebrity posed in a series of colourful and stylish hairpieces and was captured at a specially arranged photo shoot.
The individual portraits featured household names like former Pussycat Doll and Dancing on Ice judge Ashley Roberts, TV presenter, model and DJ Laura Whitmore, former TOWIE star and designer Lydia Bright and ex-Eastenders actress Michelle Ryan.
Actress and tireless charity campaigner Joanna Lumley also joined the fun, swapping her signature blonde hair for an auburn wig.
ITV’s This Morning presenters Holly Willoughby and Phillip Schofield also backed the campaign, donning brightly coloured wigs on the show on Wig Wednesday itself.
Joanna Lumley said: “I was delighted to get involved with Wig Wednesday and it’s fantastic to see how much money it has raised. It’s a great way to show solidarity with children and young people who often lose their hair as a result of cancer treatment, while also raising money for such a wonderful charity as CLIC Sargent. I will certainly be getting my wig on again on Wednesday 21 May 2014 and I hope many more do the same.”
CLIC Sargent’s National Events Manager, Anna Penwarden said: “Wig Wednesday went amazingly well this year, especially considering it is only the second year we have done it. We are hoping to see it grow and grow in the coming years and we’re determined make it as big as it can be. The feedback we’ve received from people who took part has been great and obviously we’re delighted with the total raised so everyone is really looking forward to next year now.”
Wig Wednesday 2014 will take place on Wednesday 21 May.
