Bereaved parents in Wales no longer have to pay funeral fees for children

CLIC Sargent has welcomed the Welsh Government’s announcement today (Saturday 25 March) that bereaved parents will no longer have to pay funeral fees for children.

The charity, which supports children and young people with cancer has been campaigning with other charities and Swansea East MP Carolyn Harris for a UK-wide Children’s Funeral Fund to be created.

Kate Lee, Chief Executive of CLIC Sargent, said: “It’s fantastic news that the Welsh Government has decided to ease the financial burden of families grieving the loss of a child, especially in the same week that Co-Op Funeralcare announced that it will extend its free children’s funeral service to include 16 and 17 year-olds.

"All too frequently, the cost of a funeral imposes crippling and unmanageable financial pressure on bereaved parents, during what is already an incredibly traumatic time. Grieving parents should not be made to suffer this added indignity and distress and we will continue to fight for a children’s funeral fund to support families across the UK.”
