Rounders tournament for the Princess Amelia Fund

Dan Winsbury, father to Amelia, organised a rounders tournament in Palm Bay and raised over £700 for CLIC Sargent.

Rounders tournament for the Princess Amelia Fund

On 15 June 2016, Dan, who lives in Margate, received the heart-breaking news that no parent wants to hear – his daughter had Acute lymphoblastic leukaemia (ALL).

Following a few incidents of fainting, Amelia’s mother, Tracyann, decided to take her to their local GP who confirmed that they were happy with her condition after two full examinations.

However, after two weeks and no signs of improvement, Tracyann took Amelia to Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother Hospital A&E, and by 10pm that day they were advised it could be ALL, though not confirmed.

By 2am, Amelia and Tracyann were in the Paediatric Intensive Care Unit at St George’s Hospital, over 80 miles away. A blood test was conducted and the sample sent to the Royal Marsden Hospital at approximately 3am, and by 3.45am the results were back and it was confirmed that Amelia had ALL.

Whirlwind of events

Despite the whirlwind of events, Tracyann, Amelia and friends decided to shave their heads on 28 June in support of Amelia’s journey. The hair was donated to The Little Princess Trust, where it will be made into a wig for a child who has lost their own hair through treatment.

As well as this, Amy, Cassie, Hannah and Kirsty organised a rounders tournament in Palm Bay Field, Palm Bay, and raised over £700! A total of six teams took part, meaning that approximately 80 people enjoyed the afternoon.

The family also intend to hold a charity scoot and a football tournament, all in support of the Princess Amelia Fund, which was set up by a close family friend.

Thank you

Dan said: “We would like to say thank you to the local community who have shown so much love and support towards the family.

"Amelia attends Palm Bay School and the school community are doing lots to help Amelia and CLIC Sargent.”

CLIC Sargent Fundraising Manager Charlie Straker said: “I am completely in awe of the Winsbury family. To have experienced so much within such a short space of time and still want to give back is incredible.

"Their attitude is something to be admired and I feel very humbled to be working with such a lovely family.”
