Family friends organise quiz night in support of leukaemia patient Alex Haines

The Builders Arms in Hertfordshire played host to a quiz night organised by mother and daughter team, Vivienne Cardell-Williams and Rachel Yaffe. The event included a quiz, raffle and auction, and raised a fantastic £4,100 for young lives against cancer.

Quiz organisers, Viv (with husband and daughter) and Rachel, and Alex’s sister, mum and dad.

Viv and Rachel decided to hold the event after family friend Alex Haines was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukaemia. 19 year old Alex and his family are currently being supported by CLIC Sargent at University College London Hospital.

The night included a pub quiz, an auction for three Airbnb’s in the UK, and a raffle for a luxury flight and five star hotel in Paris for two!

The event was a huge success, with all 110 tickets sold within 24 hours and £4,100 raised for young lives against cancer.

So grateful

Alex's mum Maya said: “CLIC Sargent have been amazing, they have made what we are facing feel so much more manageable.

"When our son, Alex was diagnosed, having just started his second year at university, our world was turned upside down in an instant.

"Alex was transferred to UCLH to begin three and a half years of treatment. The first few months of chemotherapy were really very grim as he suffered some debilitating complications and was bedbound and tube fed for a number of weeks.

"It was a really dreadful time but he's been amazing throughout and thankfully is tolerating treatment much better at the moment.

"Our lovely Social Worker Sarah visited us within days of Alex's diagnosis, when we were still reeling from the news and had so many questions but few answers. She reassured us that help was available, regularly checks how we are, helped Alex to access financial support, and, most significantly, when we need to be close to hospital she arranges for us to stay in Paul's House, the amazing CLIC Sargent Home from Home just yards from UCLH.

"We're so grateful to our lovely friend, Viv and her daughter, Rachel for coming up with the idea of the quiz night and for putting in so much time and effort to ensure that it was a success.”

Thank you

CLIC Sargent Fundraising Engagement Manager Charlie Straker said: “£4,100 could pay for five weeks of specialist support, to make sure a family isn’t alone in coping with a child or young person’s cancer diagnosis.

“Thanks to people like Rachel and Viv, we can be there for longer and help more young cancer patients, like Alex, get their lives back on track.”
