Golf Day raises an amazing £20,000

After Ian Sharp’s son Mathew was diagnosed with Leukaemia on Boxing Day he and his family decided to repay the support given to the family by organising a Golf Day at Nazeing Golf Club in July.

Golf Day raises an amazing £20,000

Ian says “They both did an unbelievable job in helping us cope with some difficult times. At the beginning my ex-wife Denise and I were taking it in turns to sleep in a put-up bed next to Mathew in hospital. But there’s a building just down the street called Paul’s House which is run by CLIC Sargent and fitted out like you would want your own house fitted out. If you live outside the M25, you can stay there free of charge. Whoever was looking after Mathew at any given time used Paul’s House as a place to stay.”

The aim was to raise a fantastic £10,000 to share out equally between CLIC Sargent and Teenage Cancer Trust, but the total far exceeded that. Along with golfers paying to play, the family also had the great idea to contact local companies and invite them to sponsor a hole. Photography by Louise Ltd also donated their time to take photos of all of the golfers, celebrities and the evening events which were then sold to attendees. The day was then finished off with a party in the evening where all of the non-golfers could also join in and included a raffle and auction. With the support of celebrities Barry Hearn, Steve Davis and Rod Harrington a staggering £20,000 was raised to support children and young people with cancer.

Terry Johnson, who is engaged to Mathew’s mum Denise and lives with mother and son said: “We came up with the idea and it started to snowball. We realised the level of interest and realised it was going to be a big old task. But we managed to pull it off and it was a great day.” Denise explained that Mathew is still “up and down” depending on the levels of chemotherapy received, but he is continuing to improve. His family hopes that he will be given the all-clear at the end of 2014.

Nicola Hill, Fundraising Manager for West London said: “This amount is amazing and will go a great way to support other children and young people with cancer, it’s such a fantastic outcome for Mathew and his family who worked so hard to make it a success"
