Dorelle and John McAvoy raised this amazing donation through a Summer Fair in their garden on Saturday 6 September. They had a fabulous turnout of stallholders and visitors, and even had a special visit from the Mayor of Croydon, Councillor Manju Shahul-Hameed.
CLIC Sargent was their chosen charity this year, after being nominated by their friend Sadie Rance, 21 who is currently being supported by the charity.
The McAvoy’s said: "We have always tried to choose local community charities or National charities that we have some connection with. This year knowing Julia and Sadie France through school, choosing a charity was an extremely easy choice to make. Julia and Sadie explained the work that CLIC Sargent do and how they supported Sadie, and we were determined to do our best to raise a good total.
"With the help of friends, neighbours, the patience of the family and the generous support of local businesses, the fair was a great success."
The McAvoy's fundraising success
Dorelle and John have been fundraising for around eight years, after they visited an AIDS orphanage in Kenya whilst on holiday. Their fundraising started off as simple coffee mornings, then turned into open days with jewellery sales and finally blossomed into Christmas fairs in a marquee in their back garden.
This year they yearned for the warmth and decided to hold a Summer Fair in September, enabling them to make full use of their garden.
Over the years the McAvoy’s have raised close to £20,000 for a range of charities close to their heart, including:
- The Alzheimer’s Society
- BLESMA, Blind and Limbless ex-service men
- Croydon Carers
- Huntingdon's Disease Association
Supporting CLIC Sargent
Dorelle and John presented CLIC Sargent Fundraising Manager Elizabeth Charing, CLIC Sargent Social Worker Elsa Gonzalez and Sadie Rance with their donation at the Royal Marsden Hospital in Sutton.
Elizabeth Charing, Fundraising Manager at CLIC Sargent said: "It was wonderful to meet Dorelle, John, Sadie and her mother Julia at the Royal Marsden Hospital and to receive their fantastic donation of £3,200. The money they have raised could pay for a CLIC Sargent Social Worker like Elsa for one month, providing much needed emotional and practical support to families who have a child with cancer.
"I'm also delighted to say that following the McAvoy’s nomination, Dorelle has been asked to join the Mayors Charity Committee to help raise funds during her year of office.
"Thank you so much for supporting CLIC Sargent, helping us to provide emotional, practical and financial support children and young people with cancer, and their families."
