Providing vital support
Since 2016, CLIC Sargent has been working with People’s Postcode Lottery, which has promoted a number of draws on the charity’s behalf. All of the funds raised by the players go towards ensuring CLIC Sargent is there to provide vital emotional, practical and financial support to children and young people from the moment the doctor says ‘it’s cancer’.
In 2016-17, CLIC Sargent supported 7,200 children and young people with cancer, and their families, providing vital practical, emotional and financial support. The money raised will ensure CLIC Sargent continues to support children and young people, just like Olivia Smith.
22-year-old Olivia Smith was diagnosed with Lymphoma in February this year. During her six months of treatment, Olivia has been supported by a CLIC Sargent social worker who visited her shortly after her diagnosis. Olivia said:
“It was like Beth, my CLIC Sargent social worker, was there to catch me when I was diagnosed. She just came in, and sorted everything out so I could just focus on getting better. She got in touch with my University to let them know what was happening and she’s helped us financially as well, right at the beginning she gave us a grant to help with travel costs and parking at the hospital.
“Beth also put me in touch with different charities in my area that would help me as well. She comes and sees me as well, just to make sure I’m okay. She just deals with all the stuff that you don’t want to think about when you’ve just been diagnosed with cancer – she let me focus on getting better, which has made a huge difference.
“The money raised from the players of People’s Postcode Lottery is absolutely brilliant, and will help make sure that the children and young people who have cancer will have someone like Beth there to catch them as well.”
Rachel Kirby-Rider, Director of Income and Engagement at CLIC Sargent, said:
“For many families, from the moment the doctor says ‘it’s cancer’, normal life stops. Being there to provide the emotional, financial and practical support families need to navigate through what comes next, and help to limit the damage cancer does beyond their health is absolutely vital.
“The generosity of the players of People’s Postcode Lottery is fantastic. £6million is an incredible amount of money, all of which will ensure we can continue support for the thousands of children and young people with cancer, and their families, throughout the UK. We can’t thank them enough.”
Support from players
Laura Chow, head of charities at People’s Postcode Lottery, said:
“This is a really significant amount of support from players of People’s Postcode Lottery who have raised more than £6.7 million for CLIC Sargent to date. It is great to be part of a society lottery that is helping this charity deliver vital services for young people and their families during a difficult journey.”
A minimum of 32% of every £10 subscription from the draws is awarded to charities, including CLIC Sargent.
