Make a Will month
Thank you for taking part in our 2019 Make a Will Month. The campaign is now closed, but we'd really appreciate it if you could spare a few minutes to fill out our feedback form - your feedback help us see if there's anything we can do to make Make a Will Month even better.
Engage your local community, promote your business and get new clients – all while supporting children and young people with cancer, and their families.
CLIC Sargent’s Make a Will Month offers you the opportunity to:
• Promote your business and get new clients
• Engage with your local community
• Make the most of local PR opportunities
• Help raise funds to support our work so we can be there for children and young people with cancer, now and in the years to come
As a participating solicitor, you won’t charge our supporters for your professional advice or for making the Will. Instead, supporters will be asked if they can make a donation to us, or to include a gift in their Will to us.
We know 74% of the British public support a charity during their lifetime. But only 6.3% include their favourite causes in their Will. Research from the consortium Remember A Charity shows more than a third of adults would be willing to include a charity in their Will after they’ve made provision for family and friends.
1 in 8 of the children and young people with cancer supported by CLIC Sargent are funded through gifts in Wills. So by leaving a gift in their Will, our supporters can make sure children and young people with cancer, and their families, continue to get the support they need when they need it. But there is no obligation to do so by taking up the offer.
All donations received as part of Make a Will Month will go towards helping children, young people and their families cope with the devastating impact of cancer.
For many people, writing their Will provides peace of mind, knowing their loved ones will be taken care of in the future, and that their family and friends won’t be left to deal with the difficulties arising when a friend of relative dies without a Will.
Supporters can also support any charities they feel passionate about through a gift in their Will, either through a cash donation or by leaving a percentage of their estate to charity. Many see this as a way of supporting their chosen charity’s work in the future, without it costing them a penny during their lifetime.
You’re free to set a limit on the number of Wills you write during the month, to fit in with your workload and availability. We’re hugely grateful for whatever time you’re able to give to be part of Make a Will Month, so just let us know what works best for you. We’ll make sure our supporters know appointments are limited and available on a first-come, first-served basis.
If you have multiple offices in the UK, we’d love to have them all on board! You can sign up additional offices using the standard registration form below or by including their details in an email to your local CLIC Sargent Fundraising Engagement Manager.
Gifts in Wills are vital to charities, and many wouldn’t be able to continue their important work without these wonderful gifts.
As a solicitor or will-writer, you know giving your clients the best advice means everything. Therefore, all we ask is that you give your clients the full picture, making them aware that charitable giving in their Will is an option. For example, if appropriate, you may discuss with clients the different types of gifts they can leave to charity in their Will. This includes advising on any tax advantages of giving a donation to charity, if relevant.
Of course, we aren’t asking you to specifically mention CLIC Sargent, and we want to make it clear to supporters that there is absolutely no obligation to include a gift in their Will to CLIC Sargent by taking part in Make a Will Month.
If any of your clients do choose to include a gift to CLIC Sargent in their Will, the registered charity details are as follows:
CLIC Sargent Cancer Care for Children, registered charity in England and Wales 1107328 and in Scotland (SC039857) of 77-85 Fulham Palace Road, London W6 8JA.
If your client chooses to make a donation to CLIC Sargent, we’ll provide you with donation forms for them to complete and sign. We’ll ask you to send all of these forms to us – specific details on where to send them to will be included on the donation form.
A list of all the solicitors taking part in Make Will Month will be available on our website. Supporters will need to contact their chosen solicitor directly in order to book an appointment, so you’re able to choose a date and time that works best for you. All we’ll need are the contact details you’d like us to display on our website.
The Make a Will Month offer is for the preparation of simple Wills, or amending existing Wills. If the Will is more complicated, you’re entitled to ask the client to pay a fee to reflect any additional work involved (the difference between your normal fee for a simple Will and the actual fee for all the work involved).
In these cases, we ask you to make the client aware of any additional costs at the beginning, so that they can decide whether to proceed with the Will being written.
Your local CLIC Sargent Fundraising Engagement Manager can give you with leaflets and posters to display in your offices or in your local community. We also have template press releases and social media posts to help you promote your firm’s involvement in Make a Will Month.
