What is being proposed for children and young people’s cancer services?

NHS England is seeking views on its proposals for the future of children and young people’s cancer Service Specifications and is asking people to share their views.

Service specifications define the standard of care that should be delivered in children and young people’s cancer services

What does CLIC Sargent think?

CLIC Sargent is putting together a formal response for NHS England, based on our expertise in supporting children and young people with cancer and their families.

Our response will cover the following points:

  • We welcome the updated service specifications and have worked to ensure that children, young people and their families are able to engage with the development of them.
  • We don’t think the financial impact of a cancer diagnosis on a young person or their family has been addressed and so will be calling for financial support for travel costs to be included in the essential services young people and families should receive.
  • We welcome the development of Networks to oversee services in the different regions to ensure they’re delivering what is in the Service Specification – however, we don’t think there is enough national scrutiny of the Networks and will be calling for more.
  • We think that principal treatment centres must include an intensive care unit so children and young people can get the specialised care they need as soon as possible.
