On Saturday 8 September at the Westminster Lodge Leisure Centre, there will be a basketball tournament called TIP-OFF@3 that aims to raise funds and awareness for CLIC Sargent and The Ollie Foundation.
Everyone is welcome and there will be fun and games, food and refreshment to add to the excitement on the day.
Engaging young people using sport
TIP-OFF@3 is a sister initiative to KICK-OFF@3, a football tournament created in 2017 by Met PC, Michael Wallace and Co-Founder of Suberbos Community, Ashley Levien. The events are set up to engage young people using sport and to build long lasting relationships between them and their local police force, as well as raise awareness and funds for charity.
Supporting local families
CLIC Sargent has been selected as one of the benefiting charities from TIP-OFF@3 due to two personal connections with the cause:
Basketball enthusiast, Shane Sandiford was inspired to support his friend, Naomi Balaam whose son, Brandon is currently receiving treatment for leukaemia. The Brandon family have set up a Support Me Fund in Brandon’s name, and have so far raised £12,640 for CLIC Sargent!
Naomi said: “Shane is a great work colleague and I feel very honoured that he has chosen ‘Team Brandon’. We know first-hand how important support networks are. Cancer affects the whole family and it is vital to help families, just like us, who are battling this life changing/threatening illness. It is wonderful that the event is also falling on Childhood Cancer Awareness Month”.
The family of Paul Purdy, Michael’s former boss in the Met, have also requested that the event be in support of CLIC Sargent, due to their recent loss.
A fantastic opportunity
CLIC Sargent Fundraising Engagement Manager, Charlie Straker said: “I’m really excited for CLIC Sargent to be a part of this special event. It’s such a fantastic opportunity to raise awareness of what we do in Hertfordshire, as well as to work with numerous members of the community such as Michael and Shane.
“Last year CLIC Sargent supported just under 150 young people from Hertfordshire, 50 of which were newly diagnosed. The funds raised from this event will go such a long way in helping local families, like Naomi’s, to get the support and help they need during cancer treatment.”
