About the move

Our ambitious plans for a new, larger CLIC Sargent Home from Home in Southampton - Jean's House - will give a real safe haven for up to seven families at once.

About the move

CLIC Haven

CLIC Haven, the CLIC Sargent Home from Home in Southampton opened in 1991. More than 300 families have stayed in one of its five bedrooms over the last couple of years, some for many months at a time. Families have travelled as far as from the Channel Islands, Suffolk and Gloucestershire to be treated at Southampton General Hospital.

“We often find that families’ stays with us can be unexpected and very sudden. With that in mind we try to provide basic food items free of charge, such as tea, coffee, sugar, milk, soups etc."  Mandie, Housekeeper

The house move

With the lease on CLIC Haven terminating in late 2018, we have an opportunity to move to a bigger and better property - Jean’s House – which will be our new Home from Home close to the children and young people’s oncology wards at Southampton General Hospital.

Jean's House

CLIC Sargent's refurbishment plans will transform the property into a fit for purpose Home from Home, providing seven en-suite family bedrooms, each sleeping up to four guests. This is two more rooms than is currently available at CLIC Haven, enabling us to support more families and respond to the growing need, as a new specialist young person unit opens at the hospital.

Jean's House will have functional communal spaces to accommodate the everyone staying in the property - including kitchens, family rooms, a teenagers' space, secure garden, laundry rooms, car parking, storage and an office for staff.

"The kitchen can be an ideal place for families to socialise, whilst doing the normal everyday things such as cooking and washing which they cannot do on the ward." Mandie, Housekeeper

Planning permission for the transformation was granted by Southampton City Council in October 2017 and we've now launched a fundraising appeal to cover the £1.6million cost for buying and fully adapting the building.

Thanks to the generous support from donors including Children with Cancer UK, Signet and Sir Jules Thorne Charitable Trust, we are now seeking to raise the remaining £300,000 to fully renovate and furnish the house.
