CLIC Sargent publishes its annual Impact and Accountability Report – The Good, The Bad and The Ugly
CLIC Sargent has today published its latest Impact and Accountability Report – The Good, The Bad and The Ugly, detailing an overview of the charity’s finances, money spent and vital reach of services.
The innovative and transparent report comes after CLIC Sargent overhauled the way it reported on the impact it has on young lives against cancer in 2018. The charity successfully moved away from the traditional corporate narrative and handed the power to young cancer patients and their families. The Impact Report in 2018 was also heralded for open and honest commentary of its failures, focusing on a section called ‘Hands Up, We’re Not Perfect’
The approach, applauded by the charity sector, won Best Use of Impact Reporting at the Third Sector Awards and has led the way for more charities adopting a bolder and braver approach to transparent and accountable reporting.
This year’s report continues with the ‘Their Voice Over Ours’ mantra, showcasing more real life stories than last year and highlighting a wider range of ages the charity supports. The report has given families and young people a space to tell their story, their way, providing a platform for parents and young people to speak openly and honestly about CLIC Sargent from their perspective and experience without any other agenda.
The transparency of this year’s report has also been taken to the next level – detailing not just what CLIC Sargent did in 2019 – but how they did it. CLIC Sargent boldly put out a request on social media to all supporters to ask any questions they felt the charity should answer – giving the power to supporters to decide what they want to know and be told – rather than focusing only on the highlights of the year. The charity has also created a film of members of its Exec team sharing the things they wished they’d done better last year.
The corporate narrative is delivered in three areas – ‘The Good, The Bad and The Ugly’. This allows the charity to celebrate its achievements, be open and honest about the things the charity didn’t get right, and shout about systemic issues which make life harder for young cancer patients and their parents.
Findings of the report reveal in 2019, CLIC Sargent reached 6,733 children and young people with cancer – 66 per cent of everyone under 25 diagnosed with cancer. The charity supported 23,500 people including family members of children and young people living with cancer."
The report also includes an overview of finances and, for the first time, displays the golden formula of reach, impact and money spent, which the charity plans to use more regularly in external communications.
Findings of the report reveal in 2019, CLIC Sargent reached 6,733 children and young people with cancer – 66 per cent of everyone under 25 diagnosed with cancer. The charity supported 23,500 people including family members of children and young people living with cancer.
The charity raised £29.5 million and spent £14.6million on delivering services. For every pound spent on fundraising, the charity turned it into £2.27. In response to the growing debate in the charity sector about cost ratios, this is the first year CLIC Sargent is proposing a new way for donors judging the impact a charity makes by looking at its impact versus reach and versus resources. Chief Executive of CLIC Sargent Kate Lee is keen to see more charities adopting this approach.
Kate said: “There’s no two ways about it, it has been a great 12 months for CLIC Sargent, from campaigning to fundraising and most importantly, limiting the damage cancer causes to young lives beyond their health.
“This year’s impact and accountability report celebrates the difference we made to young cancer patients and their families, and we want our supporters to feel proud of that because we know we can’t create that impact without their support.
“But we don’t believe these reports should only celebrate the good stuff. Last year we were widely praised for including the things we hadn’t got right, and this year we’ve raised the bar.
“We’re honest because we know we’re accountable to our supporters, so they have a right to know. We celebrate our successes but don’t shy away from areas we need to improve, and I hope it shows we’re trying our best in tough times, because I believe that is true.
“We’ve also included a new formula which shows the number of people reached, the impact on those people, and the resources spent achieving that impact. We hope this is helpful to our supporters and something that other charities adopt, because it will help people move away from easy but not always helpful pence-in-the-pound comparisons.”
