Alex's story

Football fan Alex McCarthy, aged 13, from Bristol was diagnosed with a brain tumour last year. Since then he and his family have been supported throughout his treatment by CLIC Sargent Nurses Jaydene and Kirsty, and their Support Worker, Janet.

Very sadly, in November,  Alex and his family were told that his cancer is now terminal.

Alex's story

List of wishes

After hearing the news, Alex and his family put together a 'bucket list' of things to do together to make the most of the time they have - and have been busy ticking off items on the list.

So far they’ve ticked off a meet and greet with football team Bristol Rovers, indoor skydiving, driving a tank, and much more.

Making memories

Recently they came down to London to go sight-seeing. That same day, Alex and his family were happy to help us out with a story in support of our Smiles at Christmas appeal with the Sun. After a special trip to 10 Downing Street for a behind the scenes tour, Alex joined the CLIC Sargent  team at the Park Plaza Hotel Westminster Bridge, for lunch courtesy of the hotel.  Then it was off to the hotel’s penthouse suite, donated for the afternoon by the hotel free of charge, to meet our celebrity supporter Frank Lampard for a special photo-shoot and video with The Sun team.

Finally the family enjoyed a trip on the London Eye, organised by Alex’s school.

You can help

Beckie Watts, Alex’s mum, said:

“We are happy and proud to be supporting CLIC Sargent’s Smiles at Christmas appeal with The Sun and it was fantastic to meet Frank.

“It would be so hard to cope with all of this without the support we get from Janet, Jaydene and Kirsty at CLIC Sargent.  And no family should ever have to go through something like this without that help.

“That’s why me and my partner Steve have been taking part in various running events to fundraise hard, and will continue to do so in future, and are asking people to dig deep and support CLIC Sargent this Christmas, so they can help many other families like ours.”
