There are many products aimed at helping people to write a Will at home without having to get professional legal advice. However, we always recommend using a solicitor who has experience of Will writing so you can be certain that your intentions are correctly recorded to carry out your wishes after you have gone.
Your solicitor will also check that the correct wording and charity information is recorded to ensure that the causes you support in your lifetime can benefit from your gifts in your Will.
You can find a local Wills & Probate solicitor in your area through the Law Society
All practicing solicitors are required to be registered with the Law Society.
Many people work hard all their lives to make sure their loved ones are secure and happy. An up-to-date and accurate Will is the only way to make your wishes crystal clear, and continue to take care of your family after your lifetime.
As well as ensuring your family and loved ones are looked after a Will also ensures that the causes you support can also be remembered. Leaving a gift in your Will to CLIC Sargent will not only secure future support for children with cancer, it may legitimately reduce your own family’s liability for Inheritance Tax too.
Firstly you need to consider the type of gift that you would like to give. Once you have decided, simply contact your solicitor to advise them that you would like to amend your Will.
I’ve left a gift to you in my Will but it’s under the old charity name (CLIC or Sargent Cancer Care for Children). Is this okay or do I need to change my Will?
Provided that the old charity name and registration details are correct we will still be able to benefit from your bequest. However, it is worth checking and should be changed to our current details if you choose to update your Will.
Your estate may be subject to Inheritance Tax if it is above the inheritance tax threshold (although charities are normally exempt from Inheritance Tax on bequests made to them in Wills). You may be able to benefit from a reduced rate of Inheritance Tax if you leave 10% or more of your estate to charity and might want to discuss possible ways of minimising the tax burden on your estate with your solicitor or financial advisor.
