A young trumpeter who fought kidney cancer as a child performed as part of a fundraising concert in Motherwell, raising £2,000 for children and young people with cancer.
Calum Blair, 16, from East Kilbride, was diagnosed with cancer when he was six years old and underwent gruelling surgery and chemotherapy.
He was supported by CLIC Sargent, which was chosen as the beneficiary of The Motherwell Symphonic Band’s annual concert in October at Motherwell Concert Hall.
The concert included film music from James Bond 007, The Lion King, Les miserable, West Side Story, the Jungle Book and more.
The Motherwell Symphonic Band was set up by Hughina Naylor more than 30 years ago.
Originally the band consisted of exceptional music pupils and former pupils from the Lanarkshire area.
Very quickly the success and reputation of the band expanded and they won several awards over the following decades, performing across Europe, including Paris, Prague, Barcelona and Cologne.
CLIC Sargent supported Calum during his treatment, visiting his school to advise teachers and students about his condition, as well as providing emotional support for him and his brother and financial advice for the family.
A vital cause
His mother Jackie said: "CLIC Sargent is a fantastic charity and it's great that the concert is raising money for such a vital cause. When I see Callum performing on stage I think about how far he has come. The cancer experience was a horrible time and I am so proud of him."
Hughina Naylor said: "It has been an honour and a privilege to conduct the Motherwell Symphonic Band since I first formed it more than 30 years ago, as a music teacher with local students.
"The band has raised so much over the years through concerts with talented musicians who give their time voluntarily. We were delighted to support CLIC Sargent for our 2016 annual concert and glad to have raised a wonderful amount."
CLIC Sargent Fundraising Manager Rachael McLean said: "We are so grateful to have been chosen as the beneficiaries for this fantastic concert. All of the money raised will help us be there for every family struck by a young cancer diagnosis."
