In 2006 Lizzie and Ian sadly lost their big sister and daughter to cancer. Subsequently, they have campaigned tirelessly for CLIC Sargent and have raised over £14,000. Here we talk to Lizzie about fundraising and how she recently took part in the Great Wall of China Trek.
Why did you decide to take on the Great Wall of China trek for CLIC Sargent?
2016 marks the 10 year anniversary since I sadly lost my sister Lucy to cancer. Throughout Lucy’s battle, CLIC Sargent was always there for me, my family and most importantly, Lucy. As we cannot thank CLIC Sargent enough, we felt it was a great time to give something back. And I wanted to prove that Lucy’s bravery and strength lives within me.
What did you enjoy most about trekking the Great Wall?
Everything! I enjoyed the challenge and found every step so rewarding. It was a great experience to do with my dad and in memory of Lucy. Most importantly, the group of trekkers was absolutely amazing. We were all on the trip for different reasons, but all there to support CLIC Sargent. It was great to speak about our story and how important and amazing the charity is.
What other fundraising activities have you organised on behalf of CLIC Sargent?
We’ve put on local concerts, dance events, raffles, face-painting and five-a-side football tournaments. At one raffle we auctioned dad’s building expertise for a day. We sold him for £100. The event that raised the most money was a gig at our local pub. My two cousins performed along with some other local singers and bands. We sold 190 tickets at £5 each and held a raffle, taking £1,870 that night.
What was involved in putting on this event?
Firstly, we picked a local popular pub in the centre of town that closed to the public and gave the venue for free. We promoted the gig on posters around the town and on social media. For the raffle we contacted local businesses for prizes. We managed to get a Land Rover weekend package, Plymouth Argyle F.C tickets and spa days. On the day, money buckets were placed around the bar areas.
And what’s next?
The China trip has really made me realise what an amazing charity CLIC Sargent is and I want to do more. I have enquired about volunteering and would love to give my time to the charity. Myself and some of the China group are looking into doing the Three Peaks Challenge next year – I cannot wait! We’re already planning another five-a-side football tournament and I have several more fundraising ideas!
