Claire King and her family took on an amazing challenge over the past year, taking part in an event every month in 2014, all in support of Claire’s nephew Ben. In her own words, Claire explains how they raised an incredible £19,000 for CLIC Sargent and talks about taking on this month’s London Marathon.
"Our 15-year-old nephew Ben’s life came to abrupt halt on 19 October 2013. After a few nights’ of back pain, Ben’s routine blood test at the local A&E department confirmed he had leukaemia.
"Tragically, four days later, just before chemotherapy was about to start, the cancer spread into Ben’s spinal cord and the pressure of the tumour paralysed Ben from his chest down. Ben turned 16 five days later.
"2014 was a blur to Ben and his Mum and Dad while they endured the heartache of Ben’s intensive chemotherapy and the subsequent rehabilitation of his paralysis. As family members on the sideline, there was little we could do to help Ben and his family other than to be there when they needed to cry or to have a hug.
"We really wanted to give back on behalf of Ben.
CLIC Sargent’s constant support for our family has been invaluable from day one and it still continues today.
"That support can never be repaid but we hoped to raise some money to help another family going through the same trauma."
An event each month in 2014
"I like to run and the idea was to enter an event in each month of 2014, but in order to get as much breadth of sponsorship as possible, I needed to widen the audience!
"There were walks, bike rides, triathlons - you name it, people joined in. For those that did not run, cake sales, coffee mornings, book sales were arranged. It was a truly fantastic year of fundraising. In fact, it continues in 2015 as three of us embark on completing the London Marathon.
"To date, we have raised almost £19,000 and the fundraising keeps on coming, with a pyjama day and cake sale coming up at my daughter’s school.
"Please watch our video to take a glimpse of a truly inspirational year."
Good Luck in the London Marathon Claire and thank you to you and all your family for your support – you are all superstars!
