Marion took part in the Totnes 10k to give something back to CLIC Sargent after the support her family received when Marion's grandaughter Emilia was diagnosed with leukaemia.
Marion said, "My granddaughter Emilia was one month short of her sixth birthday when we were told she had leukaemia. The shock and heartache we all felt was tremendous.
"She was taken from our local hospital in Torbay by ambulance to the Royal Bristol Childrens' Hospital (100 miles from her home) where her treatment began. It was in Bristol where we came into contact with CLIC Sargent, the charity providing support and accommodation at Sam's House which is in close proximity to the hospital for her distraught parents over a period of six weeks.
"Emilia is now seven and is certainly well on the way to recovery. I now feel able to try and give something back to CLIC Sargent for the support that they provided Emilia and indeed all of us during her treatment.
"I am 73 years young and have enjoyed running for the last 35 years, having completed ten London Marathons amongst other marathons. My last race had been about 15 years ago so I knew I had to put in some training even for a 10k, which was the distance I felt I could attempt. So in March this year I decided to enter the Totnes 10k race and start my fundraising for CLIC Sargent.
"The event is organised by my old running Club the Teignbridge Trotters and I have been running approximately 2 miles every Monday, Wednesday and Saturday, which coupled with my Thursday morning keep fit class, started me off.
"The Totnes 10k is off road, across beautiful countryside sometimes beside the river Dart, through woodland tracks and hills. The day was very hot and I did feel 'wobbily' to find myself in a race situation again.
"It was so good to see Emilia and her little sister Sophia halfway round holding up notices they had made themselves saying 'Run Nanny Run'. With this incentive I struggled on to the finishing straight where once again our two granddaughters popped up and with them both holding hands with me we crossed the finishing line in 1hr 28 mins.
"Over 600 runners took part in the Totnes 10K and I wasn't last! Hooray for me and thank you so much CLIC Sargent!"
