Jonny McKenzie's niece Charlotte was diagnosed with cancer in June 2014. Since then Jonny, Charlotte's dad Malcolm and her granddad Alan, along with friends and family, have been fundraising for CLIC Sargent.
The family set up a Support Me Fund in Charlotte’s name in October last year and set themselves the challenge of raising £10,000 for CLIC Sargent.
They have taken part in various fundraising activities including Movember, Jonny’s son being sponsored to give up his Xbox for a week and a charity ball.
The main event
The main event took place over the Easter weekend and was called 'Charlotte’s Challenge'. It consisted of a five day walk along the 130 mile Coast to Coast (C2C) cycle route from Whitehaven to Sunderland.
To complete the challenge the group had to walk the equivalent of a full marathon every day while carrying tents, food and sleeping bags.
Jonny said: "It was a long hard slog – like Charlotte has had.
Helping to raise money and awareness of CLIC Sargent and what it does has been a hugely positive experience for us.
"It gave us some hope and made us feel useful, and for myself, Charlotte’s Dad and her Grandfather we really needed that.”
CLIC Sargent Fundraising Manager Dee Tyler said: “We are extremely grateful to Jonny and everyone involved in the challenge.
"It’s an amazing achievement and something they should all be very proud of. They have raised a fantastic sum of money, so far over £8,500.
