Sophie's crafts raises money for young cancer patients

A Newport school girl has raised £668 by selling hand-made crafts to raise money for CLIC Sargent, which has twice supported her older brother through his cancer treatment.

Sophie's crafts raises money for young cancer patients

Sophie, 11, of Muxton, has spent many months designing and creating a selection of arts and crafts to sell at fayres around the Shropshire area.

The Christmas and New Year period saw a very busy time for Sophie but with help from mum Sonia, she has been able to raise an incredible amount for CLIC Sargent.

Support

Sonia said: “Sophie is always busy raising money for charities in our community.

"This time she decided to raise money for CLIC Sargent as they have twice supported my eldest son, Michael. First when he was a child and again when he was 18.”

At the age of four, Michael was diagnosed with Pleuropulmonary  Blastoma, a rare form of tumour on the lung.

After spending eight months on the cancer ward of Birmingham Children’s Hospital, Michael was allowed to go home.

Sonia added: “I remember we were so thrilled that we could actually go home but then our boiler broke and we needed a warm home for Michael to return to.

“It was then that we were given a grant from CLIC Sargent so that we could get the heating fixed and get our family back together.”

It was 14 years later when Michael was a young adult that an annual check-up showed he had developed cancer of the thyroid.

Again the charity provided a CLIC Sargent Social Worker to help Michael and his family deal with the effects of cancer.

So proud

Michael, now 21 and a nursing student at Keele University, said: “I am really proud of Sophie and her fundraising.

“It is great that the money is going towards the CLIC Sargent music programme which I got a lot out of.

“Last year I went on a music weekend with 16 other young people who had had cancer.

“We were able to create music that meant more to us, and what we had been through, that pop songs just don’t cover.”

Sophie said: “I really enjoy making my arts and crafts and it has been really good fun travelling around to sell them for CLIC Sargent.”

Thank you

CLIC Sargent Fundraising Manager Anna Finnegan said: “The items that Sophie has made are really beautiful, she is very talented.

"On behalf of all the children and young people with cancer that CLIC Sargent is supporting in Shropshire, I would like to say a big thank you to Sophie for the money she has raised.”
