Lifelong friends Chris Timbrell and Dave Martin from Chippenham, Wiltshire have completed a gruelling walk of the entire south west coastal path, raising over £7,400 for CLIC Sargent.
Starting on 21 April 2013, the pair set out on their hike from Minehead in Somerset on the eight week, 630 mile route with over 115,000 feet of ascents, the equivalent of climbing Mount Everest almost four times!
The pair set themselves this challenge in aid of CLIC Sargent, after the charity provided support for David’s youngest son, Tom, when he was diagnosed with cancer in 1995 at the age of 13.
Soon after Tom’s diagnosis, his family were introduced to a CLIC Sargent Social Worker at the Royal United Hospital in Bath where he received his cancer treatment.
Their CLIC Sargent Social Worker was able to help them to understand and cope with the emotional, practical and financial effects of cancer.
CLIC Sargent Nurses at the hospital were also able to coordinate Tom's clinical and non-clinical care, to maximise the amount of time he could safely spend at home, and ensure that treatments were able to be given at home where possible.
Now aged 30, Tom has been well ever since, and his family continues to show support to CLIC Sargent, to help other families who are now going through a similar experience to theirs.
Throughout their journey, Dave and Chris received warm welcomes and generosity from those they met along the way. People made donations, offered them accommodation and showed their support by carrying their luggage. Dave and Chris were even bought a few pints along the way!
After tackling all kinds of weather conditions, the pair arrived at their final destination of Poole Harbour in Dorset on the 14 June 2013 after 55 days walking.
Greeted by sunshine, cheers from family and friends, and some much needed bubbly, the pair celebrated their fantastic achievement.
Originally setting out to raise £2,500 for CLIC Sargent, the pair smashed their fundraising target raising over £7,400 for children and young people with cancer.
CLIC Sargent Fundraising Manager, Sophie Porfirio said: “Dave and Chris have been absolute legends in completing this incredibly touching challenge. I’d like to thank them for their immense stamina and bravery, and their commitment to raise such a fantastic amount for CLIC Sargent.”
