Brian Hampton, an Assistant Manager at Lidl’s New Milton store in Hampshire, has vowed to run a half marathon every month to raise funds for children and young people’s cancer support charity CLIC Sargent.
Brian, 39, started to fundraise for the charity in 2014, after Lidl UK employees voted for CLIC Sargent to become the retailer’s charity partner, and pledged to raise £1million.
Since then, Brian has raised an incredible £4,000 for the charity by undertaking marathons, half marathons and even a skydive. After time out to recover from an operation on his right foot, his fundraising continues as he undertakes a series of gruelling half marathons every month, for the rest of this year.
This November, he’s set to take his challenge to the next level, as he flies to New Zealand to take part in the Queenstown International Marathon, before taking a trip on the world’s biggest canyon swing – and then doing a bungee jump.
So far, Lidl shoppers and employees like Brian have raised £900,000 for CLIC Sargent, which could fund its entire Homes from Home network for over a year. The Homes provide free accommodation for families, close to the hospitals where their loved one is being treated.
The charity runs a Home from Home called CLIC Villa for families of patients being treated at Southampton General Hospital, which specialises in childhood cancer treatment. At the hospital itself, a team of CLIC Sargent Social Workers provide emotional, practical and financial support to families, which helps them through their most difficult times.
Brian said: “I’m from Scotland originally and a friend of the family’s little boy was diagnosed with a brain tumour a couple of years ago. They stayed at one of the charity’s Home from Homes up there, and the support they got from the charity really did make such a massive difference to them.
“I’m really proud to have raised so much money to support the amazing work CLIC Sargent does, and would love more people to sponsor my Big New Zealand challenge.”
Fern McDonald, Fundraising Manager at CLIC Sargent said: “Thanks to the support of Brian and Lidl UK, the CLIC Sargent team makes a huge difference to the lives of thousands of families who are going through the hardest of times.
“With Lidl’s support, we hope to smash our £1million fundraising target and be there for even more children, young people and families when they need us most.”
