Tuesday 22 May saw two of CLIC Sargent’s dedicated supporters carry the Olympic Torch in the South West, as part of the 70 day relay.
Firstly, brave teenager Katrina Doyle, aged 13, from Burnham-on-Sea, took on a leg through Dunster.
Katrina has shown incredible courage since being diagnosed with leukaemia at the age of seven. Katrina volunteered for a 26 month medical trial for treatment, posing possible risk to her life, but if successful paving the way for other children suffering to have a shortened treatment in future. As a keen actress, Katrina took part in pantomimes just hours after undergoing operations never missing a performance. When suffering hair loss from the chemotherapy, Katrina decided to dye it bright pink when it grew back to raise over £2,500 for CLIC Sargent.
Later on that evening, super-mum Lucy Willis completed the 136th leg of the relay in St George, Bristol, after being nominated by her work colleagues at Atkins. As the official engineering and design services provider for the London 2012 Games, Atkins was given the opportunity to nominate two colleagues to carry the Olympic Flame during the torch relay. Nominees had to have inspiring ‘personal best’ stories which demonstrated outstanding contributions to their local communities, so Lucy was a perfect candidate.
Since Lucy’s daughter, Lola, was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukaemia in 2010, Lucy has raised over £20,000 for CLIC Sargent, through shaving heads, yoga events and abseiling off Bristol Children’s Hospital.
After handing over the torch, Lucy said, “I am so honoured. It was incredible to kiss Lola holding the flame! I can’t believe how many people were watching and I am so grateful to have been nominated by my Atkins colleagues. The Torch is for my daughter, her brave friends battling cancer and to help raise awareness of CLIC Sargent’s valuable support. Lola finishes her treatment soon but our fundraising efforts will continue. I will always do all I can to help support CLIC Sargent.”
A huge thank you goes out to Katrina and Lucy for their committed support to CLIC Sargent, as well as the local communities who lined the streets during the Olympic Torch Relay to cheer them on during their special moment.
