CLIC Sargent’s first round of Big Bucket Collections for 2013 has raised more than £40,000 in one day.
The collections were held on Friday 18 October at more than 140 Tesco stores around the country.
This year’s Big Bucket Collection, which aims to raise £200,000 for children and young people with cancer between now and the end of December, is being supported by Jonnie Peacock, MBE, Paralympic and World 100 metres champion.
“The Big Bucket Collection is a great campaign which provides vital funds for children and young people coping with cancer,” says Jonnie.
“If you can spare some time to help with the collections, it makes all the difference, not just to the children and young people, but their families too.
“CLIC Sargent provides emotional, practical and financial help which helps them to deal with cancer and get the most out of life,” Jonnie added. “The more people get behind the collections this autumn, the more children and young people CLIC Sargent can go on to support.”
Hundreds of volunteer ”bucketeers” gave their time to raise funds last Friday. One Chief Bucketeer, Gill Hamilton, from Bristol said: “We had a fantastic day collecting, people were so generous, and the CLIC Sargent wizard hats we were given to wear definitely caught people’s attention! I will definitely be signing up for another collection this winter.”
Raising £210 would pay for a CLIC Sargent nurse for a day, and £1,000 would pay for a family to stay in one of CLIC Sargent’s Homes from Home for a week. Homes from Home provide free accommodation for children and young people and their families near major treatment centres.
CLIC Sargent is only able to help two out of three children and young people coping with cancer at the moment, so the money raised by local volunteers is crucial to support more children and young people, and their families.

About childhood cancer
Every day, 10 children and young people in the UK hear the shocking news they have cancer. Treatment normally starts immediately, is often given many miles from home and can last for up to three years. Although survival rates are over 80%, cancer remains the single largest cause of death from disease in children and young people in the UK.
