CLIC Sargent, the young cancer patients support charity, is concerned by a Together for Short Lives report which warns of a state funding crisis for children’s palliative care charities.
Dara de Burca, Director of Services for CLIC Sargent, said: “We are concerned by the findings of Together for Short Lives, which reveals a 61% drop in local authority funding for children’s palliative care charities and that 41% of children's palliative care charities would be forced to cut bereavement support if the children’s hospice grant was removed.
“Our care teams provide a lot of emotional and practical support to families through home visits, local support groups and memory days. However the process of losing a child is hugely devastating, and palliative care support is utterly vital. We are concerned that reductions in any area of support will have repercussions on the children and families that need this support as well as other services, which are already stretched in order to meet demand.
“Around 500 children and young people die from cancer every year. These families need vital support so that children, young people and their families can cope as best as they can when the worst happens.”
CLIC Sargent, which receives no statutory funding for its services, provides emotional and practical support for families when a child dies.

About cancer in children and young people
Today, 11 more children and young people in the UK will hear the devastating news that they have cancer. Treatment normally starts immediately, is often given many miles from home and can last for up to three years. Although survival rates are over 80%, cancer remains the single largest cause of death from disease in children and young people in the UK.
