CLIC Sargent's Chief Executive Kate Lee has written to the Secretary of State for Health, Jeremy Hunt MP, to ask some challenging questions about the cost of cancer for the families of young patients.
Our Cancer costs research found parents are spending an average of £600 extra per month during their child's cancer treatment. Many parents are also forced to give up work and can be plunged into debt.
In the letter, Kate asks the government to provide financial support to families from the day of their child's cancer diagnosis and for clarity on how a new recovery support package will be developed for children, young people and their families.
Support our Cancer costs campaign
Many families currently have to wait up to three months for government support such as Disability Living Allowance. From the moment the doctor says it's cancer, costs such as travel to hospitals, car parking and extra bills can quickly mount up – putting families under extra pressure at a time of stress.
Over 2,000 people have signed a growing petition in support of our Cancer costs campaign with a number of prominent MPs showing their support in recent days.
