Mells 10k event raises an amazing £50,000 in memory of Ben

Su, Nigel and Luke Crutchley have held the Mells 10k walking, running or cycling event every year in memory of Ben, who sadly died of cancer in 2012. The family was supported by CLIC Sargent Nurses Ally and Sally and are determined to raise £1million so that other families get the support that they need.

A huge milestone

The family’s first Mells 10k event took place in 2014 and this year, its fourth, Mini runtook the total raised for this event over the £50,000 mark.

The Crutchley’s friends and family have taken on numerous challenges and activities for CLIC Sargent and overall Ben’s fund has raised an amazing £227,101 so far.

As part of the Mells 10k, friends and family all got involved, providing entertainment and refreshments, as well as stewarding the participants through the route, which gives them exclusive access to the beautiful Mells Park Estate.

This year’s warm up was some energetic Zumba dancing and post-10k the participants enjoyed well deserved hot dogs whilst admiring their well deserved medals. A mini run saw the under fives get their very own medals.

Vital support

The Crutchleys, from Frome, were inspired to fundraise for CLIC Sargent after CLIC Sargent Nurses Sally and Ally supported their family through their toughest moments.

Ben’s Dad Nigel said: “They provided so much more than just medical advice. They guided us through how we told Ben’s older brother Luke about what was happening, explained to us about the effects of radio and chemotherapy, helped us to navigate the never ending NHS maze and supported us through some of the darkest hours anyone can imagine, but most importantly of all they were there for Ben.

"It was thanks to Sally and Ally that Ben was able to have blood tests and much of his treatment at home rather than in hospital, it was also thanks to Sally and Ally that Ben understood and wasn’t scared of any of the treatment that he was given, they were always honest, but they always cared about and intuitively knew how precious and desperately ill our little boy was."

Ben's fund

Ben’s Mum Su said: “As part of our £1million pledge to CLIC Sargent, Mells 10k has become our favourite event to organise.

"The support we receive from friends and family far and wide is incredible."

"As well as all our local friends who regularly take part we have had people join us from Scotland, Manchester, Kent, Cornwall, Wales, Berkshire the list goes on.

"It is a fantastic event in a stunning part of Somerset that is not normally open to the public. Come and join us on 13 October 2018 for our fifth Mells 10k. You won’t want to miss it.”

Thank you

CLIC Sargent Fundraising Manager Rachel Webster said: “It is such a special day to be part of, the atmosphere and community spirit is amazing and it means something different for each participant; for some it could be part of their marathon training and for others they’ve pushed themselves for their biggest distance challenge.

"Whatever their motivation, every walker, runner and cyclist is making a difference by helping raise these vital funds for young lives facing cancer."

Thank you to every one who took part and a special thank you to Su, Nigel and Luke.”
