A young cancer survivor has become a trustee of the charity which supported him throughout his illness. Jason Loo, 26, now a Senior Associate at KPMG, has joined the Board of Trustees of CLIC Sargent, a cancer charity for children, young people and their families.
Jason was diagnosed with mediastinal teratoma cancer in July 2012. Before receiving the shock diagnosis, Jason had just attended his graduation ceremony at the University of Warwick and was due to start a job at KPMG as a graduate trainee in London.
CLIC Sargent was able to provide Jason with a social worker and a youth worker from the charity who was able to offer practical and emotional support and also arrange for his start date at his new role to be postponed for a year.
Jason went on to volunteer for the charity and has spoken about his experience of cancer at a number of high profile events as well as being a member of CLIC Sargent’s Children and Young People’s Advisory Group and the Young People's Reference Group.
“CLIC Sargent’s work makes a massive difference; I’ve seen the impact of the charity first-hand on my life and those around me."
Jason said: “I feel happy and very fortunate that I’ve managed to move to the next stage of life and I definitely value life a lot more now. My own experience and the support I received is what drives me on to help as many people as possible. CLIC Sargent’s work makes a massive difference; I’ve seen the impact of the charity first-hand on my life and those around me.
“I am thrilled to be a trustee but I do recognise the responsibility I have. I want to make sure other young people have the same support that I had and to reach those who aren’t getting any help. I want to be a voice for children and young people with cancer as someone who understands and has gone through these experiences myself.”
More new appointments
Stephen George, Vice-Chair of the Institute of Fundraising, and Peter Houghton, a registered social worker with extensive experience in the management of children and adult services, have also joined CLIC Sargent’s Board of Trustees.
CLIC Sargent Chair of Trustees Peter Hollins said: “It is so important to have people like Jason on our board, to help us put children and young people with cancer and their families at the heart of everything we do. I and the rest of the Board at CLIC Sargent are looking forward to working with him.
"We are also thrilled to welcome Stephen and Peter to the CLIC Sargent Trustee Board. Their appointments and the experience they bring will help us in our mission to change what is means to be diagnosed with cancer when you’re young."
