Pub chain J D Wetherspoon has hit the £8million milestone for CLIC Sargent after raising an incredible £1million in just six months.
The company has been supporting the children and young people’s cancer charity for 11 years with staff regularly taking part in a huge range of challenges, fundraising events and collections.
It was only in May that J D Wetherspoon celebrated reaching £7million but a huge effort has seen staff smash the next target just six months later.
One of the highlights of this year’s fundraising activities was the J D Wetherspoon Kick for CLIC Sargent event, which took place in September. The company-wide football tournament broke previous records by raising a massive £471,000 with 613 pubs taking part.
Staff also took part in CLIC Sargent’s flagship event Wig Wednesday, raising more than £35,000 while chief executive John Hutson raised £2,400 by taking part in the Chicago Marathon.
Celebrations to mark the £8million milestone are being held in some of the top fundraising J D Wetherspoon pubs across the UK during November.
J D Wetherspoon founder and chairman Tim Martin said: “It’s an incredible achievement and we’re all delighted to have hit the £8million mark so quickly.
“CLIC Sargent is a wonderful charity and staff and customers really engage with the work it does supporting children and young people coping with cancer. They’re constantly coming up with new ways to raise money and keep this partnership flourishing.”
Lorraine Clifton, CLIC Sargent Chief Executive, said: “This is a fantastic achievement by J D Wetherspoon, particularly coming so soon after the last milestone. It means a great deal to CLIC Sargent – and to children and young people we support – that J D Wetherspoon staff and customers are so passionate about fundraising for the charity.
“Every penny raised will help us support children and young people whose lives have been turned upside down by cancer. We are so grateful to everyone at J D Wetherspoon for their commitment to supporting CLIC Sargent until 2015 and we look forward to celebrating many more milestones with them.”

About childhood cancer
Every day, 10 children and young people in the UK hear the shocking news they have cancer. Treatment normally starts immediately, is often given many miles from home and can last for up to three years. Although survival rates are over 80%, cancer remains the single largest cause of death from disease in children and young people in the UK.
