Children and parents from West Hove School organised a pre-Christmas toy sale for CLIC Sargent at Stoneham Park Christmas Market - which had an unexpected boost when a local newspaper reader agreed to match whatever sum was raised.
A great success
The event was a great success with nearly £700 raised. This amount has now been matched by the anonymous supporter, bringing the total raised to a fantastic £1,362.
Organiser Mel Thornton said: "The whole idea for the sale came from the children. As they started to think about what they’d like to get for Christmas this year, I asked what they’d like to give for Christmas. It wasn’t long before they came up with the idea of a toy sale.
"After putting the word out, I’ve had great support from West Hove Infant School, Hove Junior School, fellow mums and local companies.”
CLIC Sargent Fundraising Manager Helen Farquharson said: “We were delighted by the generous response to the toy sale and the last thing we expected was such a generous visitor to the event! It’s truly heartwarming.
“Not only that but we have two big bags of new toys gathered to give to children on the oncology ward at Royal Alexandra Children’s Hospital.
“A huge thank you to everyone involved, who has helped us be there for the children who will be diagnosed with cancer this Christmas”.
