One bike, 28 days and 3200 miles across America - that's the challenge that Shane Prendergast set himself to raise money for CLIC Sargent and Action on Hearing Loss.
Shane, 29, is a web developer based in Cheshire who decided to take on this challenge after being inspired by his father who raised over £52,000 for charity during Shane’s childhood by cycling across America, Australia, Canada and around the coast of Britain amongst other rides!
Shane, who is deaf, chose to raise funds for CLIC Sargent and Action on Hearing Loss as he relates to the causes both support.
Shane, whose mother was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2012, said: "I can't even begin to imagine the pain, confusion and heartache young children and their families must experience during cancer.”
In his epic Ride For The Child challenge Shane averaged 120 miles a day, with no rest days, crossed desert, mountain ranges, 11 states and four time zones.
He said: “Although it was incredibly challenging, being deaf and watching my mother battle cancer was far tougher."
There were many ups and downs along the way but with his determination and endurance and the support of his friends who tailed him in an RV, Shane completed the ride in 28 days!
CLIC Sargent Challenge Events Fundraising Manager Sue McDonagh said: "We think Shane's pretty amazing! We would highly recommend reading Shane's blog, we certainly found it a fascinating read for 28 days!"
