Ben, aged 10, from Cubert in Cornwall, raised just over £2,000 to say thank you to CLIC Sargent. He was inspired to fundraise following the news that his best friend Jake, 11, had been diagnosed with leukaemia.
Ben’s mum Glenda said: “Ben managed to swim the equivalent distance of his front door to Jake’s after only two months of training. The distance was equal to 100 lengths of Truro School’s swimming pool making a total distance 1.5 miles.”
CLIC Sargent Fundraising Manager Jordan Anderton said: “CLIC Sargent is extremely grateful for Ben’s support. The money that he has raised will make a huge difference to the families we support.
“What he has done in support of his friend Jake is incredibly inspiring, kind and selfless and he truly is a super star.”
The money Ben has raised could pay for a family to stay in one of CLIC Sargent’s Homes from Home for 60 days, providing free self-catering accommodation near to specialist children’s cancer treatment centres, which are often many miles from a family’s own home.
An average stay in a home from home is 23 days; therefore the money that Ben has already raised could support two families to stay closer to their child.
