Christmas at Paul’s House

Eric, house manager at Paul's House, CLIC Sargent’s Home from Home in London, talks about what will be happening to get ready for families who will stay there this Christmas.

Christmas at Paul’s House

Decorations and presents

The house will be filled with decorations and Christmas trees in all of the communal areas. This year there will be a Santa’s Grotto for the children and their families to enjoy.

The Home from Home will usually get donations of toys, presents and gift cards from companies or CLIC Sargent corporate partners. Sometimes families donate presents to the house for other families staying there. And in previous years, we have also received Christmas hampers from donors, which we divide up and put in the kitchens so that all the families can enjoy the goodies.

I will put together a special Christmas package for each room filled with donated presents. In addition there will be presents under the tree for all the children and young people who are staying with us at Christmas time.

In the lead up to Christmas Day, I will make a cake and host a tea and cake morning. Families are invited to come together and have a chat over tea and cake.

There will be a Father Christmas suit available, which parents can dress up in if they would like to. Some of the staff or volunteers may dress up as Father Christmas for the children too.

On Christmas Day

Some families staying at Paul’s House on Christmas Day will cook and have a traditional Christmas lunch. They may invite other relatives over for the day too. Sometimes several families will join up and have lunch together. And there will be some families who may need to have food at the hospital instead.

It is a difficult and sad time for some families as they’d just rather be in their own homes. Our team is sensitive and take our lead from the families staying with us. We know that people will wish they could be at home at Christmas time with their families, not having to stay and go to the hospital, but we hope we can help to make things a little bit easier for them. We try to bring some Christmas cheer to the families who need us.
