Malcolm Sargent House

Malcolm Sargent House is in Prestwick on the Ayrshire coast in Scotland. Originally named in memory of Sir Malcolm Sargent, the home was established as part of a holiday service more than 45 years ago for young cancer patients and their families.

Malcolm Sargent House

History of Malcolm Sargent House

It became part of CLIC Sargent’s holiday service when two charities – Malcolm Sargent Cancer Care for children and CLIC (Cancer and Leukaemia in Childhood) merged in 2005.

Over the years, thousands of families have been able to stay at Malcolm Sargent House and enjoy a holiday during or after cancer treatment in a stunning setting and relaxed atmosphere, meeting others and sharing their experiences.

Young people were also able to use the service, with the first teenage group staying in Prestwick in 1994, and Malcolm Sargent House was used for meetings of the charity’s Young People’s Reference Group in recent years.

In July 2016, it was announced that, with great sadness, CLIC Sargent would close its holiday service in Prestwick. Against the backdrop of a challenging fundraising environment the decision was taken in order to ensure CLIC Sargent’s financial health for the future, and to safeguard the charity’s essential frontline services for children and young people with cancer and their families in Scotland and across the UK.

Following a market review by CLIC Sargent’s external property advisors, CLIC Sargent agreed a conditional sale of the property with McCarthy & StoneNot all of these conditions could be met, and McCarthy & Stone later withdrew from the sale. CLIC Sargent has now sold the property to a buyer who has local links to Prestwick.

Supporting families to access holidays

While the closure of the service will be met with great sadness, CLIC Sargent is continuing to support young cancer patients and their families to access holidays and funding for holidays in the future.

If you would benefit from this type of support or would like to explore options for holidays during or after treatment, please speak to your CLIC Sargent Social Worker who will be able to help you.
