In July 2013, 26 fantastic cyclists travelled to Paris to watch the elite Tour de France cyclists cross the finish line.
At dawn the following morning those same 26 cyclists jumped in the saddle to start the 300 mile cycle challenge back to London to help raise funds for children and young people with cancer.
Paris to London Centenary Cycle 2013
Cycling 300 miles in four days during the hottest summer for many years was not easy.
Despite a 10 mile detour on day one and at least two cyclists getting lost, the entire team made it to the finish line in Greenwich on Thursday 25 July where there was a fantastic turn out of family and friends to greet them.
CLIC Sargent Fundraising Manager, Kerry Timbrell said: "Having supported all of the cyclists, from the time they signed up to the challenge until the day they set off, I was thrilled to be at the finish line in London along with over 100 family members and friends to cheer each of them home!
"Each and every one of them has done an incredible job in fundraising for the challenge and helping CLIC Sargent to smash our £60k target for this event.
"A huge thank you from everyone at CLIC Sargent as without these guys and others like them CLIC Sargent would not be able to offer our services to the thousands of children and young people that need our support."
CLIC Sargent Social Workers' join the team!
Amongst the group were three of our very own CLIC Sargent Social Workers; Liz Morrey, Rachel Leigh and Ellen Coleman.
Liz shares their experience of taking on this incredible challenge:
"So back in October 2012 Ellen, who is Dutch and loves to cycle, thought it would be a great challenge to take part in this cycle ride. Rachel and I, who have never ridden, agreed, thinking ‘that’s a great challenge’ and signed ourselves up.
"The three of us work for CLIC Sargent and the reason to take part in this challenge was to do something amazing and raise funds for the charity we all work for. In hindsight we can look back on the event and honestly say we loved, almost, every minute of it.
"The event was extremely well organised, it ran smoothly and we had great support from the Discover Adventure Team - our fellow cyclists were incredible too, and ultimately made the event as memorable as it was
"Extremes of emotions were experienced and great friendships have developed... we would not have changed the group for the world. Cycling next to people you have never met before, sharing stories and experiences and all focusing on a common goal was a fantastic experience.
"To anyone who is considering a challenge event our resounding response would be ‘do it!’ You will have the best time of your life – bring on the next one, that’s what we say."
