The Concert Orchestra, part of the outreach of Peckham Rye Tabernacle is supporting CLIC Sargent’s Practice-a-thon with a concert at Peckham Rye Tabernacle Baptist Church.
About the Concert Orchestra
The Concert Orchestra started off as a brass band in April this year. A few woodwind players joined the band and then the string players joined to finally form the Concert Orchestra.
The Concert Orchestra is formed of a mixed age group and many of the members only started to play instruments when they joined.
The Concert Orchestra played in public for the first time at Spurgeon’s College Chapel for the London Stedfast Associations 30th Anniversary Celebration and were directed by Dennis D Hawkes, a local music teacher and Baptist preacher.
About the event
The upcoming concert marks a special occasion, St Cecilia’s Day, celebrating the patron saint of musicians.
Admission to the concert is free but there will a retiring collection for which all proceeds will go to CLIC Sargent to help support children and young people with cancer, and their families.
CLIC Sargent Fundraising Manager Elizabeth Charing said: “I am delighted that the Concert Orchestra has chosen to take part in CLIC Sargent’s Practice-a-thon event.
Last year in south east London alone, CLIC Sargent supported 98 children and young people with cancer. We wouldn’t be able to provide this support without the help of people such as Dennis and everyone involved in the Concert Orchestra.”
