In May 2013, 12-year-old Alexandra began experiencing pains in her ankle whilst jumping on a bouncy castle. When the pain spread to her back and neck, Alexandra was sent to hospital for tests and was diagnosed with sarcoma cancer in August 2013.
Alexandra’s father Andre used his annual leave to travel to the hospital in Belfast for his daughter’s treatment. Costs for petrol were very high plus they had to pay £15 per day for car park and food for six months.
Andre said, “There was so much information to take in and it was very overwhelming.” This is when the family met their CLIC Sargent Social Worker for the first time who pointed out what was available financially.
The social worker was an absolutely fantastic support. She struck up a great relationship and Alexandra felt she could talk to her about anything.
Alexandra’s family were the first to use Pauls House in Belfast which only opened for the first time six months into her treatment. The family say it was like a “godsend” to them. Andre said, “After being in hospital for six months, staying in the house made the hard cancer journey so much easier, it was unbelievable. I really hope people out there know how much it meant to us. It only opened six months into Alexandra’s treatment and I wish it had been available from the start.”
Alexandra’s doctors say she is an inspiration due to her positive approach and her motto – “I’m gonna kick cancers butt!”
In July 2014 the family received the fantastic news that Alexandra is in remission.
This is why Alexandra and her family are supports Childhood Cancer Awareness Month.
