Phoebe's story

Phoebe, who is now seven, was diagnosed with cancer when she was two. She lives with her family near Loch Ness. Phoebe received her treatment at Yorkhill Children’s Hospital in Glasgow, which is a six hour round-trip from the family’s home.

Cruachan House

Phoebe completed her treatment in May 2009 and is now in remission. Her family stayed at CLIC Sargent’s Home from Home in Glasgow, Cruachan House, and also went to Malcolm Sargent House, CLIC Sargent’s holiday home in Prestwick, for a break.

Phoebe’s mum Rona shares her story.

"When Phoebe was diagnosed we were given the option to relocate down to Glasgow and put the children into nursery, but we decided not to do that. My husband stayed at home with the other children during the week and came down at the weekend, and he also swapped with me and stayed with Phoebe, while I looked after the children.

A Home from Home

"It was so good to have somewhere to stay. My mum and dad and my mother-in-law stayed with me for some of the time. It was really good to be able to have the facilities, the laundry and the toys for the children, and to be able to cook for the family, which I love doing.

"I also appreciated having the support worker once a week, she stayed with Phoebe while I had a break for two hours on a Thursday. It was very intense being on the ward all the time, so it was good to know that you could go away without feeling guilty because Phoebe was being looked after.”
