How we helped Amber

Today 10 families will hear that their child has cancer.

CLIC Sargent is the UK’s leading charity dedicated to helping them. We provide clinical, practical and emotional support to children and young people with cancer, and their families.

Watch our latest fundraising advert to hear Lara, mum to Amber, telling us in her own words about the impact childhood cancer has had on her family, and how CLIC Sargent supported them through this intensely challenging time.

Amber was diagnosed with a brain tumour at just eight months old.

The family had recently moved to Sheffield, which meant Amber’s dad Mark had to commute to his Nottingham-based job, while mum Lara stayed with Amber in Sheffield throughout the hospital treatment.

CLIC Sargent Social Worker Jude was a huge support to the family, giving them someone to turn to when times were tough.  She helped the family apply for financial assistance, such as housing benefit to help run the house and keep it comfortable for Amber when she was at home.

“Having the CLIC Sargent team around has made this living nightmare easier to bear by providing invaluable advice alongside great hugs and cups of tea. I can say to any family about to embark on this journey that this is a charity that will make a difference and we are eternally grateful for the help we have received.”  Lara, Amber’s mum

Emotional and practical support

CLIC Sargent has over 200 health and social care professionals, including social workers, nurses and play specialists, who work in hospitals around the UK. Our staff are specialists in working with children and young people with cancer and have recognised social work, nursing or youth work qualifications appropriate to their roles.

CLIC Sargent health and social care professionals aim to help the whole family deal with the impact of cancer and its treatment, life after treatment and, in some cases, bereavement.
