Launched by CLIC Sargent and Trekstock, RENEW is an activity programme for young adults living with and beyond cancer aged between 16-39.
The pilot programme aims to empower young adults living with cancer to lead a more active and energised lifestyle. In partnership with Trekstock we are delivering an exercise programme that will help young adults to establish their 'new normal' after experiencing a diagnosis of cancer, and being either stable on treatment or up to five years post treatment.
What is RENEW?
RENEW is 12-week, self run physical activity based intervention, intent at providing evidence towards the positive effects of physical activity on individuals who have experienced cancer. It is tailored to help young adults reach their individual exercise goals. Young adults will be equipped with the skills and empowered to make positive, long lasting change.
RENEW will run until the end of February 2017, operating out of leisure centres in London (Central YMCA) and Birmingham (Birmingham Wellbeing Service). It also operated in Southampton (Bitterne Leisure Centre, Chamberlayne Leisure Centre and Quay Swimming and Diving Complex) until 31 December 2016. Young adults work with a Level Four Personal Trainer to develop a personalised exercise plan, which is to be executed at one of our delivery locations for free.
Exercise and cancer
Physical activity is found to decline during and after cancer treatment and often never returns to pre-diagnosis levels. This may be due to barriers such as inaccessibility, fear and a lack of knowledge or know how.
A healthy lifestyle during and after cancer is associated with improved physical and psychological well-being, reduced side effects of treatment, enhanced self-esteem, reduced risk of recurrence, and improved survival.
Young adults can self refer to RENEW, or be referred in by a member of the multi disciplinary team.
If you would like to learn more about RENEW, or know of any young adults between the ages of 16 and 39 who have experienced cancer in the last five years who may want to participate in RENEW please contact: Lauren Hyden at firstname.lastname@example.org or on 0207 439 8607.
