17-year-old Brodie was diagnosed with leukaemia when she was 15. During her treatment at the Royal Hospital for Sick Children in Edinburgh Brodie and her mum Arlene stayed at CLIC Villa, one of CLIC Sargent’s nine Homes from Home.
Arlene told us: “I stayed at CLIC Villa for almost nine months when Brodie was undergoing her treatment and I just don’t know what we would have done without it. It meant that I could be there for her; it’s a fantastic place. The house is always so clean, and the staff are amazing.
“When Brodie had to be in hospital over Christmas me and Brodie’s brother were able to stay at CLIC Villa. Thanks to CLIC Sargent we could all be together for Christmas; without CLIC Villa we would have been separated and it wouldn’t have been the same.”
Whilst undergoing treatment Brodie was also studying for her maths and English exams. She was able to sit one of her exams in CLIC Villa and told us: “The house was completely silent for me. There was a vase of flowers on the desk and they had made me a card. It made me feel as if I was okay, and I was just doing the exam like a normal person. When I came down after I had finished they were all cheering me which was lovely.”
Scotland Homes from Home Appeal
CLIC Sargent’s Homes from Home provide free self-catering accommodation close to the hospital so that families can stay together during this difficult time.
The NHS are building new hospitals in Edinburgh and Glasgow which will be several miles from the old sites, and so CLIC Sargent is relocating its Homes from Home in both cities. CLIC Sargent urgently needs to raise £3million so that we can move our Homes from Home and continue to provide families with this essential service.
