When a child is diagnosed with cancer the family may feel shocked and confused. But as Fiona found, CLIC Sargent clinical care professionals provide care and support all the way.
"Sarah was diagnosed at just four months old. The shock was hard enough, but so was understanding her illness. Caroline our CLIC Sargent Nurse was fantastic, reassuring us and explaining everything clearly."
CLIC Sargent Specialist Clinical Care
When a child goes into hospital they are in safe, experienced hands, with CLIC Sargent Nurses working as key members of the team looking after them. When a child goes home, CLIC Sargent makes sure that this high level of clinical care and support continues.
CLIC Sargent Nurses
As well as working as part of the oncology team, CLIC Sargent Nurses make home and school visits too. So families get to know their nurse and the standard of care is consistently high.
Meeting the CLIC Sargent Nurse
Parents will meet CLIC Sargent Nurses on paediatric oncology wards or children's wards, depending on the hospital.
How are CLIC Sargent Nurses different to NHS nurses?
CLIC Sargent Nurses have the same training, and are even employed by the NHS. The funding CLIC Sargent provides means they can take their specialist skills out into the community too.
What happens when a CLIC Sargent Nurse makes a home visit?
The nurse can carry out treatment, such as taking blood and cleaning lines. Some chemotherapy can take place at home too. A visit also gives parents the opportunity to talk about their child which many families find to be a huge support.
What happens when a CLIC Sargent Nurse visits my child’s school?
Nurses can visit a child’s school with the teacher from the hospital. Together they update the class teacher on the child’s work in hospital, and also on how treatment may affect the child when he or she returns to mainstream education.
Where do CLIC Sargent Nurses work?
CLIC Sargent fund a number of specialist nurses who work throughout the country on paediatric oncology wards and children's wards.
