Home > About childhood cancer > For teachers > Treatment >- Inform staff sensitively about developments and changes eg letting them know where they can get further support, having an organised meeting so everyone hears news at once
- Invite a nurse and other professionals to speak to members of staff eg a nurse or teacher from the hospital, who can explain what’s happening and answer any questions
- Arrange home tuition with the local authority’s home tuition service if this is recommended by the pupil’s medical team
- Liaise with hospital teaching services to make sure the pupil has appropriate work and to find out how they are getting on
- Circulate letters about infection risks when requested by the family or health professionals. A template letter can be found in Pupils with Cancer: A guide for teachers
- Agree changes to school rules and circulate arrangements to all staff eg if a pupil will be wearing a baseball cap, not taking part in PE, leaving a lesson early, coming in part-time, homework extensions
- Inform staff about long-term effects, such as fatigue.
