The hardy souls who made a mad dash into the sea on Valentine’s Day have helped to raise hundreds of pounds for CLIC Sargent.

In total 33 people took part in the Valentine’s Day Dip and Nip at Combe Martin to raise vital funds for families affected by childhood cancer.  This year’s fundraiser, which was supported by the local carnival committee, saw brave swimmers sponsored to take to the sea for a bracing dip before enjoying a hot drink.

Some participants even opted for fancy dress, sporting nurses outfits to highlight one of the many vital services offered by CLIC Sargent.  Among the dippers was CLIC Sargent Nurse, Jenny Birch who is based at the North Devon District Hospital, and is currently working with 10 families in the local area.

Emma Perry, CLIC Sargent’s local Event Fundraising Manager, said: “The event was a real success. More than 30 people took the plunge and braved the chilly waters.  It was a really fun day and certainly a very different way to spend Valentine’s Day. We raised £1,489 which is fantastic. Thank you to all the people who took part, those who came to watch and offer their support, and to the event sponsor The Royal Marine Hotel in Combe Martin which provided a place for swimmers to change as well as free hot drinks.”

Locally the Charity funds a nurse based at the North Devon District Hospital as well as financial grants to help cover the increased costs that families face when their child has cancer.

All funds raised from the dip in the sea go directly to CLIC Sargent so the Charity can continue its vital work.
