A record number of supporters turned out for the 19th Great Western Canal Walk on Sunday 17th May. The 150 walkers we expected were boosted by about 100 more who thankfully were not deterred by the terrible weather to take on the 10 mile walk from Tiverton to Burlescombe and raise funds for CLIC Sargent.
The walk was started by a young boy called Oliver from a local primary school who is currently being supported by CLIC Sargent.. Ten of his school friends, all under 10 years of age, were walking to support him and included Team Jellytots. Other teams included Team Kira and Blackdown Medical Practice.
They were joined by the Baker family – who have taken part for the past 12 years as has 87-year-old Iris Bond from Cullompton. Normally Iris walks with her friend Lily Smith, 81-years-old who could not make it this year. Also Nossi Kendall from Plymouth took part and has done so ever since the event started 19 years ago!
Joint first to finish were father and son Charles and Harry, followed by Peter Woodley from Cullompton.
Well done and thank you to everyone who took part. The organiser, Effi Mason would also like to give a huge thanks to Kingdoms Coaches for their support and to the Sampford Peverell ladies and their husbands who manned the four drinks stations along the route.
Money is still being collected and counted. Please send your money and sponsor form in to Mrs Jill Woodley, 3 Stuart Crescent, Cullomton, Devon EX15 1XJ as soon as possible. Cheques are to be made payable to CLIC Sargent. The final total raised will be revealed in due course so please come back soon.
