On Friday 16 March Danny Johnson-Green (25) from Leicester returned from an epic 200-mile bike ride that saw him ride from Leicester to London and back again in a bid to raise money for CLIC Sargent, who are currently supporting him and his family. Danny has been accompanied en route by friends, Yvonne Wilkinson (18) and Gary Bacon (24).
Danny explains the motivation behind the bike ride: “My wife, Kate, and I were recently told that our 20-month-old twin boys, Jamie and Terry, both have Acute Lymphoblastic Leukaemia (ALL). Since then we’ve been on an unimaginable journey watching them cope with regular chemotherapy and medical procedures that would make a grown man squirm. With the help of CLIC Sargent though, we are getting through it and the boys seem to be coping well. My friends and I decided we wanted to give something back though, so we’re cycling from Leicester to London and back again. We hope to get sponsored and collect money along the way, so that families like ours can continue to benefit from the support and care offered by CLIC Sargent.”
Kate Johnson-Green, the boys’ mother, adds: “Being told one of your children has a life threatening illness is any parent’s worse nightmare, so it’s impossible to explain how completely devastated we were to hear that both of our boys had cancer. Life has been a complete rollercoaster ride since then. Jamie and Terry were in hospital for most of December, but were thankfully allowed home just before Christmas. In organising this bike ride, Danny is going on a journey of his own, and in doing so he hopes to be able to raise the much needed funds to help families like ours.”
