Following his Land's End to John O’Groats bike ride in 2008 which raised £56,000 for CLIC Sargent, Matt Loughrey decided he needed a new challenge.
On June 12th this year he arrived in Gibraltar after a marathon 10 day journey by bike from Chatham, Kent which included cycling over the Pyrenees.
Both rides were in memory of his daughter Emily who passed away on 12th June 2007 after developing cancer whilst on a round the world trip.
Over 10 days of cycling, Matt and the three riders who accompanied him – Russ Oldfield, Olly Nissen & Ray Sanderson – covered around 150 miles a day. They carried everything they need with them on trailers and panniers.
After the ride Matt said: “The ride was gruelling and tested us to the absolute maximum, we were often on our bikes for up to 18 hours a day. When you stop and think for a moment why are riding it takes away the pain and drives you on to the end.”
A huge thank you to Matt, Russ, Olly & Ray for an amazing achievement and to Caroline & Jessica Loughrey and everyone who gave such fantastic support to them.
Matt is hoping to raise £5,000 this year, if you would like to make a donation please visit www.justgiving.com/mattloughrey
